Balancing the Feed: Using Social Media Without Letting It Run Your Practice
Social media has become a cornerstone of marketing in today’s world. This can be especially true for private practice owners. It’s where potential clients discover your services, where colleagues refer and connect, and where your voice can be amplified to reach the right people at the right time.
But let’s be real… it can also become a full-time job if you’re not careful.
Many therapists and private practice owners feel the pressure to post constantly, be on every platform, and keep up with trends. But the truth is, while social media is important, it shouldn’t overshadow the work you love doing most: helping your clients and running a sustainable, value-aligned business.
Let’s look at why social media is essential, and how to manage it without burning out or losing focus on your real mission.
Why Social Media Is Valuable for Your Private Practice
Connection with Potential Clients
Your social media is often the first place people “meet” you. It offers a glimpse into your personality, style, and values. And that’s often what builds trust and encourages a potential client to reach out.
Increased Visibility
Even with a great website, you still need to get people there. Social media helps drive traffic to your website and ensures that more people see your services. It also provides “proof of life”, showing that your business is still open.
Professional Networking
Social media is a space to build relationships with fellow therapists, referral sources, and organizations that align with your practice.
Education & Impact
Social platforms allow you to share useful insights, resources, and perspectives with a wider audience. This extends your reach and provides value beyond your direct client work.
But It Shouldn’t Run Your Life Or Your Business
Just because social media is powerful doesn’t mean it should consume your energy or derail your priorities. When it starts to feel like a burden, it’s time to get strategic! And maybe bring in some support.
Here are some of my favorite ways to keep your social media working for you, not the other way around:
Tools to Make Social Media More Manageable
Let Go of Expectations
You don’t need to go viral. You don’t need to be on top of every trend. The most important tool in your social media toolbox is to let go of the expectations of what your social media strategy “should” look like. Pick an amount of posting and engagement that is sustainable for you and stick to it.
Content Calendars
A content calendar helps you plan your posts in advance, align your content with your business goals, and avoid last-minute panic. It gives structure and strategy to your messaging. No more guessing what to post every day!
Schedulers
Platforms like Buffer, Later, Publer, and even Meta’s native planner let you schedule your posts in advance, freeing up your time during the week. Batch your content once a month or once a week, schedule it, and then let it run while you focus on clients and business growth.
Outsourcing Content Creation
You don’t have to do this alone. If creating content isn’t your strength or it’s just not where you want to spend your time, bring in help. I use Office Mercenary for support with my content creation, and it’s made a huge difference in freeing up my energy to focus on the work I love. Thanks, Natalie!
Recycle Evergreen Content
Not every post needs to be brand new. If a post got great engagement or still rings true, repost it! Update the caption or image if you’d like, but don’t be afraid to reuse strong content.
Mindful AI Use
AI tools can help you brainstorm content ideas, draft captions, or even generate images. But it’s key to use them mindfully. Make sure everything still sounds like you. Authenticity always wins.
Social Media With Purpose
The key to using social media effectively in your private practice is to approach it with intention. You don’t have to be everywhere or do everything. Choose what works for you, align your strategy with your business values, and give yourself permission to delegate, automate, or simplify as needed.
You’re building a business that’s rooted in connection, impact, and sustainability. Let your social media reflect that without letting it run the show.
