Authenticity in Marketing

For so many mental health professionals, marketing feels awkward, overwhelming, or just plain inauthentic. After all, you were trained to be a Mental Health Professional, not a marketer or social media expert. But there is good news! Marketing your private practice doesn’t have to feel like shouting into the void or pretending to be someone you’re not.

This summer, we are going to focus on shifting the narrative from marketing as an inauthentic performance, into something manageable and achievable!

Marketing can feel real.
Marketing can feel aligned.
Marketing can even be enjoyable.

But it starts with you getting clear on what feels true for you and letting go of what doesn’t.

Not All Advice Is for You (And That’s Okay!)

There is a lot of noise out there about how to market your practice. Some people will tell you to be on every social platform. Others will insist that SEO is king. Some swear by video or short form content. Still, others say email marketing is where it’s at.

Here’s the truth: There is no one-size-fits-all marketing plan.

Take the advice that resonates with your values, your bandwidth, and your natural strengths, and leave the rest. That’s not failure. It’s discernment.

Start with What You Like

Yes, there really may be parts of marketing that you enjoy! You don’t need to like everything about marketing to be successful at it!

Ask yourself:

  • What parts of marketing feel energizing or interesting to me?

  • What feels draining or overwhelming?

  • Is there a format I naturally gravitate toward, like writing, talking, or designing?

  • Do I enjoy engaging with people on social media? Or would I rather let my website do the talking?

You don’t need to master everything. You just need to build consistency in the areas that feel authentic to you.

Here are a few common marketing areas to consider:

  • Blogging – Are you someone with a lot to say and a love for writing?

  • Social Media – Do you like connecting with others online or sharing bite-sized wisdom?

  • Video or Audio Content – Do you enjoy speaking or teaching? Could you host a podcast or make short videos?

  • Website Maintenance – Does it feel satisfying to tweak, update, and optimize your site?

  • Email Marketing – Would you enjoy writing newsletters or building relationships via inbox?

Start with what you like. Build consistency there. You can always grow or expand later.

And What About the Rest?

There will probably be some tasks you really don’t enjoy or just don’t have time for. Marketing can quickly turn into a full time job of its own, but you have a business to run!

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need to do this personally?

  • Can I outsource it to a VA, a designer, or a copywriter?

  • Can I simplify it or do it less often?

There is no honor in becoming a marketing martyr in the name of supporting your private practice. The goal is for you to be able to lift your practice up, not burn yourself out. If it doesn’t serve you or your audience, you’re allowed to let it go or let someone else handle it.

Marketing with Integrity Starts Here

Authenticity in marketing starts with permission:
✔ ️ Permission to listen to your instincts.
✔ ️ Permission to follow your curiosity.
✔ ️ Permission to opt out of trends that don’t fit your goals.
✔ ️ Permission to build a marketing plan around your strengths, not your “shoulds.”

This summer, we’ll be sharing more tips, tools, and perspectives to help you market with integrity. But today, just start by noticing what works (and doesn’t work) for you.

You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do you consistently and clearly.
